About 5 minutes to read · 12 quiz questions

A student sits at a desk in a quiet university library with open books, blank sticky notes and a laptop, writing an essay.

01

dies: refer back to a whole statement

In academic texts, dies (this) refers back to the whole content of the previous sentence. It never changes its form: Viele Studierende arbeiten neben dem Studium. Dies wirkt sich auf ihre Noten aus. Before a noun, use the declined form dieser, diese or dieses instead: diese These, dieses Ergebnis.

Viele Studierende arbeiten neben dem Studium. Dies wirkt sich auf ihre Noten aus.

Many students work alongside their studies. This affects their grades.

Die Autorin vertritt eine klare These. Diese These wird im zweiten Kapitel begründet.

The author puts forward a clear thesis. This thesis is justified in the second chapter.

Viele Quellen sind veraltet. Dies erschwert die Arbeit.

Many sources are out of date. This makes the work more difficult.

Die Studie kommt zu einem überraschenden Ergebnis. Dieses Ergebnis wird oft zitiert.

The study reaches a surprising result. This result is often quoted.

Dies used on its own is singular, so the verb is singular too. Die These means thesis or claim, die Quelle source, das Zitat quotation and die Hausarbeit term paper. Sich auswirken auf means to have an effect on.

02

dabei and dadurch

Dadurch shows a result or a means: as a result, by this. Dabei shows something that happens in the course of an action: in doing so, while doing this. Both link a sentence to the one before; in position 1 they are followed directly by the verb.

Die Autorin vergleicht zwei Studien. Dabei stützt sie sich auf aktuelle Daten.

The author compares two studies. In doing so, she relies on current data.

Die Quellen werden genau angegeben. Dadurch wird die Argumentation überprüfbar.

The sources are cited precisely. As a result, the argument becomes verifiable.

Ich habe die Interviews ausgewertet. Dabei ist mir ein Muster aufgefallen.

I analysed the interviews. While doing so, I noticed a pattern.

Die Umfrage war sehr klein. Dadurch sind die Ergebnisse nur begrenzt aussagekräftig.

The survey was very small. As a result, the findings are of limited value.

Sich stützen auf means to rely on, and auffallen (to be noticed) takes the dative: mir ist ein Muster aufgefallen. Auswerten means to analyse, überprüfbar verifiable and aussagekräftig meaningful.

03

dessen and deren: avoiding ambiguity

Sein and ihr can be ambiguous when two people are mentioned. Dessen (for a masculine or neuter noun) and deren (for a feminine noun or a plural) always refer to the last one mentioned: Professor Weber kritisiert Professor Brandt und dessen Methode. As relative pronouns they mean whose: die Forscherin, deren Buch ich zitiere.

Professor Weber kritisiert Professor Brandt und ___ Methode.
Das ist der Forscher, ___ ich zitiere.
Laut Lena Roth, ___, ist die These umstritten.

Professor Weber kritisiert Professor Brandt und dessen Methode.

Professor Weber criticises Professor Brandt and Brandt's method.

Die Autorin zitiert eine Kollegin und deren Studie.

The author quotes a colleague and the colleague's study.

Das ist der Forscher, dessen Artikel ich zitiere.

This is the researcher whose article I am quoting.

Laut Lena Roth, deren Buch 2019 erschien, ist die These umstritten.

According to Lena Roth, whose book appeared in 2019, the thesis is disputed.

Dessen and deren do not change for the noun that follows: dessen Methode, dessen Buch, deren Studie. In a relative clause the verb goes to the end. Zitieren means to quote, and laut (according to) introduces a source.
