01
Rename a noun with an apposition
An apposition is a noun phrase that renames or explains the noun just before it. It stands between commas and has the same case as that noun: Lena Roth, eine junge Malerin, stellt in Köln aus. Here both noun phrases are in the nominative.
Lena Roth, eine junge Malerin, stellt ihre Bilder in Köln aus.
Lena Roth, a young painter, is exhibiting her pictures in Cologne.
Die Galerie Nord, ein kleiner Raum am Hafen, zeigt moderne Kunst.
Galerie Nord, a small space by the harbour, shows modern art.
Murat Aydin, der Leiter des Museums, eröffnet die Ausstellung.
Murat Aydin, the director of the museum, opens the exhibition.
Das ist Paul Weber, ein bekannter Bildhauer.
This is Paul Weber, a well-known sculptor.
The apposition keeps its own gender: Die Galerie Nord, ein kleiner Raum am Hafen. At the end of a sentence only the first comma remains. Die Malerin means painter, der Bildhauer sculptor and die Ausstellung exhibition; all artists here are fictional.
02
Keep the same case
In careful writing the apposition copies the case of its reference noun. After an accusative object it is accusative, after mit or danken it is dative, and after a genitive it is genitive: die Pläne des Museums, eines Hauses mit langer Tradition.
| case | reference noun | apposition |
|---|---|---|
| accusative | Ich kenne den Kritiker, | einen Journalisten. |
| dative | Wir danken dem Künstler, | einem früheren Lehrer. |
| genitive | die Pläne des Museums, | eines Hauses mit Tradition |
Ich habe Jonas Berg, den Kritiker der Stadtzeitung, interviewt.
I interviewed Jonas Berg, the critic of the city newspaper.
Wir sprechen mit Eva Klein, der Kuratorin der Ausstellung.
We are talking to Eva Klein, the curator of the exhibition.
Das Projekt gehört zu den Plänen des Museums, eines Hauses mit langer Tradition.
The project is one of the plans of the museum, an institution with a long tradition.
Die Stadt dankt dem Künstler, einem früheren Lehrer, für sein Geschenk.
The town thanks the artist, a former teacher, for his gift.
Check the article of the first noun, then give the apposition the same case: dem Künstler, einem früheren Lehrer. Die Kuratorin means curator and der Kritiker critic.
03
Use appositions in criticism
Art critics use appositions to add information without starting a new sentence. The apposition can be a whole noun phrase with its own attributes: die Installation, ein Raum voller Plastikflaschen. Its case still follows the reference noun.
Die Installation, ein Raum voller Plastikflaschen, kritisiert unseren Konsum.
The installation, a room full of plastic bottles, criticises our consumption.
Viele Besucher loben die Künstlerin, eine Frau mit klarer Botschaft.
Many visitors praise the artist, a woman with a clear message.
Der Kritiker vergleicht das Werk mit einem Spiegel, einem Bild unserer Gesellschaft.
The critic compares the work to a mirror, an image of our society.
Die Debatte über den Preis, einen der wichtigsten Kunstpreise des Landes, bleibt lebhaft.
The debate about the prize, one of the country's most important art prizes, remains lively.
Useful words for criticism: zeitgenössisch contemporary, umstritten controversial, die Botschaft message and die Installation installation. Über meaning about takes the accusative, so after über den Preis the apposition is accusative too.
