01

wofür: what people stand up for

After etwas, alles, nichts, vieles or das, and after a whole clause, German uses a wo-compound as the relative word. The preposition comes from the verb: sich einsetzen für becomes wofür. The relative clause sends its verb to the end.

Saubere Luft ist etwas, wofür sich viele Menschen einsetzen.

Clean air is something that many people campaign for.

Ein sicherer Schulweg ist das, wofür die Eltern seit Jahren kämpfen.

A safe route to school is what the parents have been fighting for for years.

Die Gruppe sammelte Tausende Unterschriften, wofür sie viel Anerkennung bekam.

The group collected thousands of signatures, for which it received a lot of recognition.

Es gibt vieles, wofür sich Nora interessiert.

There are many things that Nora is interested in.

After an ordinary noun, use the preposition plus der, die or das instead: das Thema, für das ... . Sich einsetzen für means to campaign for and die Unterschrift signature. All groups here are invented.

02

womit: what people agree with or expect

When the verb or adjective goes with mit, the relative word is womit: einverstanden sein mit, rechnen mit. A womit clause after a whole sentence comments on everything that was just said.

Write a petition

A petition or a press release from a citizens' initiative often links demands, actions and reactions. Relative clauses with wo-compounds let you comment on a whole statement without starting a new sentence.

Wir fordern mehr Grünflächen, wofür wir bereits viele Unterschriften ___.
Die Petition wurde abgelehnt, ___ sich die Initiative nicht abfinden will.
Es gibt einiges, worüber wir mit dem Stadtrat ___.

Wir fordern mehr Grünflächen, wofür wir bereits viele Unterschriften gesammelt haben.

There are several things we would like to discuss with the town council.

Die Anwohner protestierten vor dem Rathaus, wofür sie eine Genehmigung brauchten.

Die Petition means petition, die Grünfläche green space, die Genehmigung permit and sich abfinden mit to accept or put up with. The finite verb goes to the very end: wofür wir viele Unterschriften gesammelt haben.
