01
von … auf: from one value to another
To give the starting value and the new value, use von plus the dative and auf plus the accusative: Die Zahl stieg von 200 auf 350. Auf always names the new level, not the size of the change. All figures in this chapter are invented.
Die Zahl der Fahrgäste stieg von 200 auf 350.
The number of passengers rose from 200 to 350.
Der Anteil sank von 30 auf 25 Prozent.
The share fell from 30 to 25 per cent.
Der Preis ist von zwei auf drei Euro gestiegen.
The price has risen from two to three euros.
Die Zahl der Mitglieder ist von 80 auf 120 gewachsen.
The number of members has grown from 80 to 120.
Steigen (to rise), sinken (to fall) and wachsen (to grow) use sein in the Perfekt: ist gestiegen, ist gesunken, ist gewachsen. Der Anteil means the share, der Fahrgast passenger and das Mitglied member.
02
um: the size of the change
Um names the difference, the amount by which something changes: Die Zahl ist um 15 Prozent gestiegen. Compare the two prepositions: um 5 Prozent means by 5 per cent, auf 5 Prozent means to 5 per cent.
| Meaning | German |
|---|---|
| from … to … | von 30 auf 25 Prozent |
| by … | um 5 Prozentpunkte |
| to … | auf 25 Prozent |
| at … | bei 25 Prozent |

Der Anteil sank auf 25 Prozent.
The share fell to 25 per cent.
Sich erhöhen (to increase) and sich verringern (to decrease) are reflexive and use haben: Die Kosten haben sich erhöht. Der Umsatz means sales or turnover. When a percentage itself changes, the difference is given in Prozentpunkte: from 30 to 25 per cent is a fall um 5 Prozentpunkte.
03
liegen bei, der Anstieg um, der Rückgang von … auf
To state a current level, use liegen bei: Die Quote liegt bei fünf Prozent. The nouns der Anstieg (the rise) and der Rückgang (the decline) keep the same prepositions as the verbs: ein Anstieg um zehn Prozent, ein Rückgang von 40 auf 32 Prozent.
Die Arbeitslosenquote liegt bei fünf Prozent.
The unemployment rate is five per cent.
Die Grafik zeigt einen Anstieg um zehn Prozent.
The chart shows a rise of ten per cent.
Das Diagramm zeigt einen Rückgang von 40 auf 32 Prozent.

Im Vergleich zum Vorjahr hat sich die Zahl verdoppelt.
Compared with the previous year, the number has doubled.
Die Grafik and das Diagramm are words for a chart, and die Arbeitslosenquote is the unemployment rate. Zeigen takes the accusative: einen Anstieg. Sich verdoppeln means to double and uses haben.
