Diversity

Use pair forms, neutral nouns and nominalised participles to address and describe people of every gender, and judge which form fits the register.

About 5 minutes to read · 12 quiz questions

A diverse group of adult colleagues of different ages sits in a circle of chairs at a workshop, listening to a facilitator.

01

Naming women and men: pair forms

German nouns for people traditionally have a masculine form, and a feminine form with -in. The masculine plural has long been used for mixed groups and is still common. To address or describe a mixed group explicitly, many texts use the pair form: Kolleginnen und Kollegen. It is accepted in every register, from speeches to job advertisements.

Liebe Kolleginnen und Kollegen, herzlich willkommen zum Workshop.

Dear colleagues, welcome to the workshop.

Die Ärztinnen und Ärzte der Klinik arbeiten in gemischten Teams.

The doctors at the clinic work in mixed teams.

Jede Mitarbeiterin und jeder Mitarbeiter kann an der Schulung teilnehmen.

Every employee can take part in the training.

Wir suchen eine Ingenieurin oder einen Ingenieur für unser Team.

We are looking for an engineer for our team.

The feminine plural ends in -innen with a double n. Some nouns add an umlaut: der Arzt → die Ärztin. In a pair form, the words that go with each noun change too: jede Mitarbeiterin und jeder Mitarbeiter.

02

Neutral words for everyone

Another way is to choose words that do not mark gender at all. Some are ordinary nouns, such as die Person, die Lehrkraft or das Mitglied. Others are nominalised participles: die Studierenden, die Teilnehmenden.

Die Studierenden diskutieren über Vielfalt an der Hochschule.

A teacher should treat all children fairly.

Jedes Mitglied des Vereins hat eine Stimme.

Every member of the club has a vote.

Die Teilnehmenden erhalten nach dem Kurs eine Bestätigung.

The participants receive a confirmation after the course.

The grammatical gender of a neutral noun never changes: a man can be die Lehrkraft and a woman das Mitglied. Nominalised participles decline like adjectives: der Studierende, ein Studierender, die Studierenden, and Studierende without an article.

Different views on inclusive language

Gender-inclusive language is debated in Germany. Some institutions write forms with a star or a colon, such as Lehrer*innen, while others avoid them; the official spelling council has not added these signs to the standard rules. Pair forms and neutral words are standard German, so they are safe in every text. Eva and Jonas discuss the topic.

Eva findet, dass Sprache alle Menschen sichtbar ___.
Jonas hält Doppelformen in langen Texten ___ umständlich.
Die Stadtverwaltung spricht in ihren Briefen alle ___ an.

Eva findet, dass Sprache alle Menschen sichtbar machen sollte.

Eva thinks that language should make all people visible.

Jonas hält Doppelformen in langen Texten für umständlich.

Jonas considers double forms cumbersome in long texts.

Die Stadtverwaltung spricht in ihren Briefen alle Beschäftigten an.

In its letters, the town administration addresses all employees.

Beide sind sich einig, dass ein respektvoller Ton am wichtigsten ist.

Both agree that a respectful tone matters most.

Umständlich means cumbersome and sichtbar visible. Halten für means to consider something to be: Jonas hält das für umständlich. Die Beschäftigten, the employees, is another nominalised participle.
