01

man instead of the passive

Instead of a werden passive such as Die Felder werden gedüngt, German often uses man as a general subject: Man düngt die Felder. The object stays in the accusative, and man always takes a third-person singular verb.

man instead of the passive
FormPassiveWith man
presentDie Felder werden gedüngt.Man düngt die Felder.
with a modal verbDie Lebensmittel müssen gekennzeichnet werden.Man muss die Lebensmittel kennzeichnen.
present perfectDas Getreide ist geerntet worden.Man hat das Getreide geerntet.

02

Adjectives with -bar

An adjective ending in -bar says that something can be done: erkennbar means can be recognised, nachvollziehbar can be traced or understood. It replaces kann … werden: Die Herkunft kann nachvollzogen werden becomes Die Herkunft ist nachvollziehbar.

For critics, the long-term consequences of genetic engineering can hardly be assessed.

-bar attaches to the stem of a verb that takes an object: erkennen becomes erkennbar, kompostieren becomes kompostierbar. Das Siegel is a quality label and die Herkunft the origin. The last sentence reports the view of critics, not a settled fact.

03

sich lassen plus infinitive

Sich lassen plus an infinitive also says that something can be done: Bioeier lassen sich erkennen means organic eggs can be recognised. The thing affected is the subject, lassen agrees with it, and the infinitive goes to the end.
