About 5 minutes to read · 12 quiz questions

Three adults share a meal of stew, bread and vegetables at a wooden kitchen table.

01

An unspecified dish

Irgendein refers to an unspecified person or thing, often with the sense of any one at all. Before a noun it takes the same endings as ein. When it replaces a neuter noun on its own, use irgendeins.

Für das Fest kocht Jonas irgendeinen Eintopf.

Jonas is cooking some stew or other for the celebration.

Eva möchte die Suppe nicht mit irgendeiner Zutat verändern.

Eva does not want to change the soup with just any ingredient.

Es gibt viele Familienrezepte, aber Jonas wählt irgendeins aus.

There are many family recipes, but Jonas picks one at random.

Für Eva ist dieses Gericht nicht irgendein Essen, sondern eine Erinnerung an ihre Kindheit.

For Eva, this dish is not just any meal but a reminder of her childhood.

Irgend- does not change the case pattern: irgendeinen Eintopf, mit irgendeiner Zutat. Der Eintopf is a stew, die Zutat an ingredient and das Familienrezept a family recipe.

02

Something new, nothing unfamiliar

Etwas means something and nichts means nothing. Both stay unchanged, but an adjective used as a noun after them has a capital letter. In the nominative and accusative it usually ends in -es, as in etwas Neues and nichts Fremdes.

Familiar eating habits can change over time.

Etwas can also mean a little before a substance, as in etwas Salz. Do not add nicht to nichts to express a single negative. Die Essgewohnheit is an eating habit, and vertraut means familiar.

03

Familiar food and belonging

After a dative preposition, the adjective following etwas or nichts ends in -em. Compare etwas Vertrautes with mit etwas Vertrautem. In this short account of a shared meal, the pronouns leave the food unnamed while the adjectives describe what matters to the guests.

Mit etwas ___ auf dem Teller fühlt sich Eva zu Hause.
Die Gäste wollen von nichts ___ im Essen wissen.
Eva ergänzt irgendein Rezept mit etwas ___.

Mit etwas Vertrautem auf dem Teller fühlt sich Eva zu Hause.

With something familiar on her plate, Eva feels at home.

Die Gäste wollen von nichts Künstlichem im Essen wissen.

The guests want nothing to do with anything artificial in the food.

Eva ergänzt irgendein Rezept mit etwas Eigenem.

Eva adds something of her own to some recipe or other.

Beim gemeinsamen Essen entsteht ein Gefühl der Zugehörigkeit.

Eating together creates a sense of belonging.

Mit etwas Eigenem means with something of your own. Von nichts wissen wollen means to want nothing to do with something. Die Zugehörigkeit means belonging, and künstlich means artificial.
