Comparing amounts: im Vergleich zu
Im Vergleich zu means compared with. It introduces the reference point when you say that something is more, less, bigger or smaller. The preposition zu always takes the dative. Here, an employee reports on equal pay in a fictional company.
Im Vergleich zu Männern verdienen Frauen im Durchschnitt weniger.
Compared with men, women earn less on average.
In unserer Firma ist die Lücke im Vergleich zum Vorjahr kleiner geworden.
In our company, the gap has become smaller compared with the previous year.
Lena arbeitet im Vergleich zu ihrem Kollegen weniger Stunden.
Compared with her colleague, Lena works fewer hours.

Zum is short for zu dem and zur for zu der. Verglichen mit means the same and is common in reports. Die Lohnlücke is the pay gap, and im Durchschnitt means on average.

Showing a contrast: im Gegensatz zu
Im Gegensatz zu means unlike or in contrast to. Use it when two people or situations are different in kind, not just in amount. It also takes the dative. The people in these examples describe how roles in their families are changing.

Im Gegensatz zu früher is a fixed phrase meaning unlike in the past. Anders als means the same as im Gegensatz zu and is a little less formal. Die Elternzeit is parental leave and die Hausarbeit housework.

Starting a sentence with a comparison
Both phrases often open a sentence to set the frame for what follows. The whole phrase then fills the first position, so the verb comes next and the subject follows it.
Im Vergleich zu anderen Branchen ist der Frauenanteil in der Pflege hoch.
Compared with other sectors, the proportion of women in care work is high.
Im Gegensatz zu vielen Kollegen verhandelt Nora ihr Gehalt selbstbewusst.
Unlike many colleagues, Nora negotiates her salary confidently.
Im Vergleich zum letzten Jahr sitzen mehr Frauen im Vorstand.
Compared with last year, more women sit on the board.

Unlike many men of his generation, Tim works at a daycare centre.
