01

Fractions: ein Drittel der Befragten

Fractions are neuter nouns ending in -tel: ein Drittel, ein Viertel, ein Fünftel. Die Hälfte is the exception. The group being divided follows in the genitive: ein Drittel der Befragten, die Hälfte der Haushalte. The survey and all figures in this chapter are fictional.

Ein Drittel der Befragten lebt allein.

A third of the respondents live alone.

Die Hälfte der jungen Erwachsenen wohnt noch bei den Eltern.

Half of the young adults still live with their parents.

Drei Viertel der Menschen sind mit ihrem Leben zufrieden.

Three quarters of the people are satisfied with their lives.

Ein Fünftel der Bevölkerung ist älter als 65 Jahre.

A fifth of the population is older than 65.

Fractions do not change in the plural: drei Viertel. Der Befragte (the respondent) is an adjectival noun, so the genitive plural is der Befragten. With a singular fraction such as ein Drittel, the verb is usually singular.

02

Percentages: 40 Prozent der …

Prozent has no plural ending: 40 Prozent. As with fractions, the group follows in the genitive: 40 Prozent der Befragten. Words such as rund (around), knapp (just under), gut (just over) and fast (almost) make a figure less exact.

40 Prozent der Befragten arbeiten in Teilzeit.

40 per cent of the respondents work part-time.

Nur zehn Prozent der Familien haben drei oder mehr Kinder.

Only ten per cent of families have three or more children.

Knapp die Hälfte der Befragten engagiert sich ehrenamtlich.

Just under half of the respondents volunteer.

Gut 60 Prozent der Menschen leben in Städten.

Just over 60 per cent of people live in cities.

With Prozent and a plural group, the verb is normally plural: 40 Prozent der Befragten arbeiten. In Teilzeit arbeiten means to work part-time, and sich ehrenamtlich engagieren means to volunteer.

03

jeder dritte Haushalt, die Mehrheit

Another way to give a share is jeder, jede or jedes plus an ordinal number: jeder dritte Haushalt, jede vierte Person, jedes fünfte Kind. Jeder agrees with the gender of the noun, the ordinal takes the weak ending -e, and the verb is singular. Die Mehrheit (the majority) and die Minderheit (the minority) also take a genitive.

In unserer Stadt besteht jeder ___ Haushalt aus nur einer Person.
Jedes fünfte Kind ___ mit zwei Sprachen auf.
Jede vierte Person ___ täglich den Bus.

In unserer Stadt besteht jeder dritte Haushalt aus nur einer Person.

In our town, one in three households consists of just one person.

Jede vierte Person nutzt täglich den Bus.

One in four people uses the bus every day.

Jedes fünfte Kind wächst mit zwei Sprachen auf.

One in five children grows up with two languages.

Die Mehrheit der Befragten fühlt sich in ihrem Viertel wohl.

The majority of the respondents feel at home in their neighbourhood.

Der Haushalt is masculine, die Person feminine and das Kind neuter. Mit zwei Sprachen aufwachsen means to grow up with two languages, and sich wohlfühlen means to feel at home. Here das Viertel is not a fraction but a neighbourhood.
