About 5 minutes to read · 12 quiz questions

A woman puts her phone in a drawer in the evening and picks up a book, while running shoes wait by the door for the next morning.

01

Regret in a main clause

To say what someone should, could or would have had to do, use hätte plus two infinitives: Ich hätte früher aufhören sollen. The modal verb stays in the infinitive instead of becoming a participle, and it always comes last.

Ich hätte schon früher mit dem Rauchen aufhören sollen.

I should have stopped smoking earlier.

Lena hätte jeden Tag zehn Minuten üben können.

Lena could have practised for ten minutes every day.

Wir hätten öfter zu Fuß gehen müssen.

We would have had to walk more often.

Jonas hätte die neue Gewohnheit besser planen sollen.

Jonas should have planned the new habit better.

Say hätte aufhören sollen, not hätte aufhören gesollt. Die Gewohnheit means the habit, die Änderung the change and die Ausrede the excuse.

02

In a dass-clause: hätte before both infinitives

In a subordinate clause the conjugated verb normally goes to the very end. With two infinitives this rule has an exception: hätte comes before both infinitives. So you say dass er hätte gehen müssen, not dass er gehen müssen hätte.

Objects and adverbs stay before hätte: dass er weniger Zucker hätte essen sollen. Nicht hätte ... dürfen means should not have.

03

The same order with hat in the Perfekt

The rule also applies to real past events in the Perfekt. When a modal verb is combined with another infinitive, hat comes before both infinitives in a subordinate clause: dass sie hat aufstehen müssen. This describes what actually happened, not a regret.

Sofia erzählt, dass sie jeden Morgen um sechs ___.
Jonas ist froh, dass er die alte Routine endlich ___.
Murat berichtet, dass er für die neue Routine auf Kaffee ___.

Sofia erzählt, dass sie jeden Morgen um sechs hat aufstehen müssen.

Sofia says that she had to get up at six every morning.

Jonas ist froh, dass er die alte Routine endlich hat aufgeben können.

Jonas is glad that he has finally been able to give up the old routine.

In everyday speech many people avoid this pattern and use the Präteritum instead: dass sie aufstehen musste. Auf etwas verzichten means to do without something, and die Routine means the routine.
