A cabaret artist performs on a small stage while adults at small round tables laugh.

01

Irony: saying the opposite

Irony says the opposite of what is meant. Many ironic comments in German use Konjunktiv II: the unreal form signals that the words are not meant literally. Das wäre ja noch schöner! literally means that would be even nicer, but it says certainly not.

Das wäre ja noch schöner!

Certainly not, that is out of the question!

Das wäre ja auch zu einfach gewesen.

Of course, that would have been too easy.

Da hätten wir ja gleich zu Hause bleiben können.

We might as well have stayed at home.

Als ob der Zug jemals pünktlich wäre!

As if the train were ever on time!

Das Kabarett is a stage show of political and social satire, die Kabarettistin a female cabaret artist and die Pointe the punchline. The particle ja makes such comments sound knowing. Als ob with Konjunktiv II rejects an idea ironically.

02

Satire: imagining an unreal world

Satire exaggerates by imagining an unreal world. Konjunktiv II builds these scenarios: würde plus infinitive or forms such as hätten and wäre for the present, hätte or wäre plus participle for the past. An unreal condition can also start with the verb instead of wenn.

Wenn Ausreden Strom erzeugen würden, hätten wir keine Energiekrise.

If excuses generated electricity, we would have no energy crisis.

Wäre die Sitzung noch länger gewesen, hätten wir dort übernachtet.

If the meeting had been any longer, we would have spent the night there.

Man könnte meinen, die Behörde hätte Spaß an Formularen.

One might think the office loved forms.

In einer perfekten Welt würde jede Sitzung nur fünf Minuten dauern.

In a perfect world, every meeting would last only five minutes.

Use Konjunktiv II in both halves of an unreal condition: Wenn Ausreden Strom erzeugen würden, hätten wir … . Die Satire means satire and übertreiben to exaggerate. Man könnte meinen introduces an ironic guess.

03

Polite words, sharp meaning

Exaggerated politeness can carry criticism. Konjunktiv II past forms such as Es wäre nett gewesen … or Du hättest … können sound polite but often express a reproach. Tone and context show whether the speaker is sincere or sarcastic.

Es wäre nett gewesen, wenn jemand Bescheid ___.
Du hättest ruhig früher fragen ___.
Das ___ ich jetzt wirklich nicht gedacht.

Es wäre nett gewesen, wenn jemand Bescheid gesagt hätte.

It would have been nice if someone had let me know.

Wären Sie vielleicht so freundlich, Ihr Handy auszuschalten?

Would you perhaps be so kind as to switch off your phone?

Du hättest ruhig früher fragen können.

You could easily have asked earlier.

Das hätte ich jetzt wirklich nicht gedacht.

I really would not have thought that.

The particle ruhig in Du hättest ruhig früher fragen können adds the sense that nothing was stopping you. With a modal verb, the past form uses hätte plus two infinitives: hätte fragen können.
