About 5 minutes to read · 12 quiz questions

Two adult friends sit at a café table, one looking puzzled while the other explains something with a small hand gesture.

01

Understand the whole expression

An idiom has a meaning that you cannot reliably work out from its individual words. Nur Bahnhof verstehen means to understand nothing, and auf dem Schlauch stehen means to be temporarily unable to work something out. Den Nagel auf den Kopf treffen means to identify exactly what matters; um den heißen Brei herumreden means to avoid getting to the point.

Bei dieser Erklärung verstehe ich nur Bahnhof.

I cannot understand any of this explanation.

Bei dieser Aufgabe stehe ich auf dem Schlauch.

I am stuck on this task.

Mit deiner Bemerkung triffst du den Nagel auf den Kopf.

Your comment hits the nail on the head.

Bitte rede nicht um den heißen Brei herum.

Please do not beat about the bush.

Learn the noun, article and preposition together. These expressions suit conversation and informal commentary; plain wording is usually clearer in official minutes. Auf dem Schlauch stehen describes a temporary mental block, not a lack of intelligence.

02

Use idioms for plans and support

Jemandem die Daumen drücken means to wish someone luck. Ins kalte Wasser springen describes tackling an unfamiliar task without preparation, and zwei Fliegen mit einer Klappe schlagen means achieving two aims with one action. Etwas auf die lange Bank schieben means postponing something instead of dealing with it.

Ich drücke dir für das Vorstellungsgespräch die Daumen.

I am keeping my fingers crossed for your interview.

Ohne Vorbereitung musste Jonas ins kalte Wasser springen.

Without preparation, Jonas had to jump in at the deep end.

Mit dem Einkauf auf dem Heimweg schlage ich zwei Fliegen mit einer Klappe.

By doing the shopping on the way home, I kill two birds with one stone.

Wir dürfen die Entscheidung nicht auf die lange Bank schieben.

We must not put off making the decision.

The person receiving good wishes is dative: Ich drücke dir die Daumen. Keep the fixed forms ins kalte Wasser and auf die lange Bank. These everyday idioms can make informal advice vivid, but use a plain request when precision matters.

03

Keep the idiom, change the grammar

An idiom keeps its fixed vocabulary while its verb follows ordinary grammar. In a subordinate clause the finite verb moves to the end. You can also use an idiom in the Perfekt or passive when its meaning allows it.

Eva sagt, dass sie bei dieser Erklärung ___.
Jonas hofft, dass wir ihm für das Vorstellungsgespräch ___.
Lena ärgert sich, weil die Entscheidung auf die lange Bank ___.

Eva sagt, dass sie bei dieser Erklärung nur Bahnhof versteht.

Eva says that she cannot understand any of this explanation.

Jonas hofft, dass wir ihm für das Vorstellungsgespräch die Daumen drücken.

Jonas hopes that we will keep our fingers crossed for his interview.

Lena ärgert sich, weil die Entscheidung auf die lange Bank geschoben wird.

Lena is annoyed because the decision is being put off.

Mit ihrer Frage hat Sofia den Nagel auf den Kopf getroffen.

With her question, Sofia has hit the nail on the head.

Nur Bahnhof verstehen becomes nur Bahnhof versteht with sie. The past participles are getroffen and geschoben; the passive puts geschoben before wird in a weil clause. Preserve the fixed noun phrases even when the tense or sentence structure changes.
