01

When the reporting form looks unchanged

In formal reports, Konjunktiv I marks information as attributed to a source. With third-person plural subjects, forms such as haben look exactly like the indicative, so writers often use Konjunktiv II instead: hätten. Formal writing usually keeps a distinct Konjunktiv I form such as habe or seien when it already marks the report clearly. The newsroom and claims in this lesson are fictional.

When the reporting form looks unchanged
UseDirect statementReported statement
singular with a distinct reporting formDas Team hat zwei Quellen.Das Team habe zwei Quellen.
plural with a replacement formDie Autoren haben zwei Quellen.Die Autoren hätten zwei Quellen.
plural with a distinct reporting formDie Quellen sind unabhängig.Die Quellen seien unabhängig.

Die Redakteurin erklärt, ihr Team habe zwei unabhängige Quellen.

The editor explains that her team has two independent sources.

Lena berichtet, die Autoren hätten zwei unabhängige Quellen.

Lena reports that the authors have two independent sources.

Lena berichtet, die Reporter hätten den Ursprung des Bildes geprüft.

Lena reports that the reporters have checked the origin of the image.

Die Redakteurin versichert, die Quellen seien unabhängig.

The editor assures us that the sources are independent.

The replacement form does not by itself mean that the report is false or doubtful. Die Quelle is a source of information, such as a person or document; unabhängig means independent, and der Ursprung means origin. Check the evidence as well as who makes the claim.

02

Use a distinct Konjunktiv II form

The same replacement works with verbs such as kommen, geben and finden. Their third-person plural Konjunktiv I forms match the indicative, but kämen, gäben and fänden clearly mark indirect speech. Here these forms report the source's present claim; they do not automatically move the event into the past.

Use a distinct Konjunktiv II form
MeaningThird-person plural Konjunktiv IReplacement form

Die Reporter erklären, ihre Informationen kämen aus verschiedenen Quellen.

The reporters explain that their information comes from various sources.

Die Redaktion erklärt, ihre Autoren gäben auch Gegenargumente wieder.

The editorial team explains that its authors also present counterarguments.

Lena berichtet, viele Leser fänden die Überschrift einseitig.

Lena reports that many readers find the headline one-sided.

Die Kritiker meinen, wirtschaftliche Interessen stünden im Vordergrund.

The critics think that economic interests take priority.

Einseitig means one-sided, die Voreingenommenheit means bias, and das Gegenargument means counterargument. Wirtschaftliche Interessen are economic interests. A report about bias should still make clear whose assessment it gives.

03

When würde makes the report clearer

When both Konjunktiv forms match an indicative form, writers can use würden plus an infinitive to mark indirect speech clearly. For prüfen the sequence is prüfen, prüften, würden prüfen, and the strong verb vergleichen also has an ambiguous Konjunktiv II form, verglichen. In the examples below, the würde forms report present habits rather than future promises. Without dass, würden comes second in the reported clause; with dass, it follows the infinitive at the end.

Die Redaktion erklärt, ihre Autoren würden jede Behauptung vor der Veröffentlichung ___.
Lena berichtet, dass die Autoren Fakten und Wertungen klar ___.
Lena betont, dass die Reporter regelmäßig mehrere Quellen ___.

Die Redaktion erklärt, ihre Autoren würden jede Behauptung vor der Veröffentlichung prüfen.

The editorial team explains that its authors check every claim before publication.

Lena berichtet, dass die Autoren Fakten und Wertungen klar trennen würden.

Lena reports that the authors clearly separate facts and judgements.

Lena betont, dass die Reporter regelmäßig mehrere Quellen vergleichen würden.

Lena stresses that the reporters regularly compare several sources.

Die Autoren erklären, sie würden regelmäßig über lokale Themen berichten.

The authors explain that they regularly report on local topics.

Die Behauptung means claim and die Wertung means judgement. Formal reporting often favours concise forms such as hätten and kämen, although würde alternatives can also be grammatical. The würde form is useful when the simple Konjunktiv II matches the past tense, but context must distinguish reporting from a condition.
