01

un- and -los: the opposite and without

The prefix un- turns an adjective into its opposite: gewöhnlich becomes ungewöhnlich, unusual. The suffix -los attaches to a noun and means without: die Mühe becomes mühelos, effortless, and die Sprache becomes sprachlos, speechless.

Zweisprachigkeit ist in vielen Familien nicht ungewöhnlich.

Bilingualism is not unusual in many families.

Ohne Übersetzung war der Brief für mich unverständlich.

Without a translation, the letter was incomprehensible to me.

Aylin wechselt mühelos zwischen Deutsch und Türkisch.

Als mein Sohn plötzlich Italienisch sprach, war ich sprachlos.

When my son suddenly spoke Italian, I was speechless.

Nicht ungewöhnlich, not unusual, is a polite double negative that means fairly normal. Die Zweisprachigkeit means bilingualism.

02

miss-: wrongly or badly

The prefix miss- means wrongly or badly. It forms verbs and nouns: missverstehen, to misunderstand, and das Missverständnis, the misunderstanding. Verbs with miss- are inseparable, so their participle has no ge-: Ich habe dich missverstanden.

Ich habe die Anweisung der Lehrerin missverstanden.

I misunderstood the teacher's instruction.

Das Missverständnis entstand durch ein falsches Wort.

The misunderstanding arose from a wrong word.

Die Formulierung im Elternbrief ist missverständlich.

The wording in the letter to parents is open to misunderstanding.

Der erste Versuch, zweisprachig zu unterrichten, ist missglückt.

The first attempt to teach bilingually failed.

Missverständlich means open to misunderstanding, while unverständlich means impossible to understand. Missglücken means to fail and forms its Perfekt with sein: Der Versuch ist missglückt.

03

nicht- and choosing the right form

Nicht- forms nouns for people or things outside a group: der Nichtmuttersprachler, the non-native speaker, and das Nichtmitglied, the non-member. Choose the form by meaning: un- gives the opposite, miss- means wrongly, nicht- simply excludes, and -los means without.
