B2-8 · Making diplomatic proposals

Negotiating

Use Konjunktiv II to propose terms, ask for flexibility and set a polite limit in a fictional deal.

About 5 minutes to read · 12 quiz questions

A café owner and a local printer compare sample menus and a price sheet across a counter.

01

Open with a proposal

A café owner is ordering printed menus. Konjunktiv II lets her explore an agreement without presenting her preference as a demand. Könnten Sie …? asks politely whether the other person can do something.

Könnten Sie den Preis noch einmal prüfen?

Could you review the price once more?

Ein kleinerer Auftrag wäre für uns sinnvoller.

A smaller order would make more sense for us.

I would like a quote for fifty copies.

Wir würden zunächst nur die Speisekarten bestellen.

We would initially order only the menus.

Könnten, wäre and hätte soften the approach. They do not make the proposed terms vague: you can still name a quantity, price or date.

02

Offer something in return

A negotiation connects one side's request to the other side's interests. Wenn can introduce a hypothetical condition. The examples keep the condition and the offer in Konjunktiv II.

If you could deliver earlier, we would accept today.

For a larger quantity, we could make a concession to you.

Would you agree to delivery on Friday?

In return, we would prepare the files ourselves.

In the wenn clause, the conjugated verb goes last. When that clause comes first, the main clause begins with its conjugated verb: Wenn … könnten, würden wir … .

03

State a limit without closing the door

Politeness also leaves room for a clear no. The café owner explains her budget and offers a smaller order. The final indicative sentence confirms the agreement once both sides accept it.

Unfortunately, that would be too expensive for our budget.

Könnten wir uns auf fünfzig Exemplare einigen?

Could we agree on fifty copies?

Wir würden dafür auf die Zusatzseiten verzichten.

In return, we would do without the extra pages.

Wir vereinbaren fünfzig Exemplare zum besprochenen Preis.

We agree on fifty copies at the price discussed.

Das wäre … keeps a proposal tentative. Wir vereinbaren … records the actual agreement. Use a clear amount or condition so diplomatic language does not hide your position.
