01

Keep the preposition with the verb

In this extract from a learning journal, Nora describes habits she wants to change. Learn each verb together with its preposition and case. Arbeiten an takes the dative, sich konzentrieren auf takes the accusative, and sich auseinandersetzen mit takes the dative.

Keep the preposition with the verb
MeaningVerb and caseExample
work onarbeiten an + Dativan einem Ziel arbeiten

I am working on a realistic goal for the next three months.

In doing so, I focus on one small step per week.

I am examining my old habits.

After a setback, I sometimes doubt my abilities.

These prepositions belong to the verb, so movement does not decide the case. Der Rückschlag means setback, die Gewohnheit habit and sich auseinandersetzen mit to examine or engage seriously with something.

02

Ask about a person or a thing

Use wo-compounds to ask about things or ideas, and da-compounds to refer back to them. Add r before a vowel, as in worauf and darauf. For people, keep the preposition and use wen, wem or a personal pronoun instead.

Worauf bist du bei deiner Entwicklung besonders stolz?

What are you especially proud of in your development?

I am proud of the progress I have made in speaking.

Who can you rely on when you need support?

I can rely on my mentor and speak openly with her.

Stolz auf takes the accusative, and sich verlassen auf means to rely on someone or something, also with the accusative. Die Mentorin means a female mentor; der Fortschritt means progress.

03

Link the preposition to a whole clause

When the object is a whole clause, a da-compound can carry the verb's preposition. An infinitive clause can describe your own action; a dass-clause has an explicit subject and a finite verb at the end.

I am working on changing my habits step by step.

I rely on my mentor answering me honestly.

I expect the change to take time.

Whether I achieve my goal depends on how regularly I practise.

Rechnen mit means to expect or allow for something, while abhängen von means to depend on something. In these journal entries, keep the da-compound before the clause and the comma between them.
