B2-2 · Attitudes, prepositions and case

Personality and psychology

Describe attitudes precisely with adjective-preposition combinations, and choose the correct case in context.

About 5 minutes to read · 12 quiz questions

Three adult colleagues discuss ideas around a table, listening thoughtfully and taking notes in a calm office.

01

Describe behaviour precisely

In a team discussion, a general label such as 'difficult' says little. Adjectives with prepositions let you name a person's attitude toward a specific issue. Read these observations without treating one action as a permanent personality trait.

Mara ist offen für neue Ideen, aber empfindlich gegenüber Kritik.

Mara is open to new ideas but sensitive to criticism.

Jonas ist stolz auf seine Arbeit und an ehrlichem Feedback interessiert.

Jonas is proud of his work and interested in honest feedback.

Die Teamleiterin ist mit dem Ergebnis zufrieden.

The team leader is satisfied with the result.

Sie ist für die nächste Entscheidung verantwortlich.

She is responsible for the next decision.

Learn the adjective, its preposition and the case together. These combinations express a relationship: interested in something, proud of something, responsible for something.

02

The adjective chooses the pattern

Do not choose a preposition by translating word for word. Learn a complete pattern: stolz auf + accusative, interessiert an + dative, zufrieden mit + dative. The case belongs to this adjective-preposition combination.

The adjective chooses the pattern
Pattern and meaningGerman example
proud of · auf + accusativestolz auf meinen Fortschritt
interested in · an + dativeinteressiert an einem Gespräch
satisfied with · mit + dativezufrieden mit meiner Entscheidung
convinced by · von + dativeüberzeugt von diesem Vorschlag
responsible for · für + accusativeverantwortlich für die Entscheidung
open to · für + accusativeoffen für neue Ideen
sensitive to · gegenüber + dativeempfindlich gegenüber deutlicher Kritik

Ich bin stolz auf meinen Fortschritt.

I am proud of my progress.

Ich bin an einem offenen Gespräch interessiert.

I am interested in an open conversation.

Ich bin mit meiner Entscheidung zufrieden.

I am satisfied with my decision.

Ich bin von diesem Vorschlag überzeugt.

I am convinced by this proposal.

The location-or-direction rule for two-way prepositions does not decide the case in these fixed combinations. Here, stolz auf takes the accusative and interessiert an takes the dative.

03

Separate attitude from behaviour

These adjectives are not interchangeable. Someone can be open to an idea without being convinced by it. Responsibility for a decision does not mean satisfaction with its result.

Ich bin offen für den Vorschlag, aber noch nicht von ihm überzeugt.

I am open to the proposal but not yet convinced by it.

Mara ist an Kritik interessiert, reagiert aber manchmal empfindlich auf sie.

Mara is interested in criticism but sometimes reacts sensitively to it.

Jonas ist für die Planung verantwortlich, aber mit dem Zeitplan unzufrieden.

Jonas is responsible for planning but dissatisfied with the schedule.

Die Leiterin ist stolz auf das Team, nicht nur auf das Ergebnis.

The leader is proud of the team, not just the result.

Unzufrieden uses mit just like zufrieden. Notice the distinction between the adjective empfindlich gegenüber Kritik and the verb phrase empfindlich auf Kritik reagieren. The verb phrase has its own pattern; do not swap the prepositions.

04

Choose the preposition and case

Try the three sentence choices below. Each missing phrase must match both the adjective's preposition and its case. Check your choice, then compare it with the full example.

Sie ist ___ interessiert.
Er ist stolz ___.
Wir sind ___ zufrieden.

Sie ist an einem ehrlichen Gespräch interessiert.

She is interested in an honest conversation.

Er ist stolz auf seinen Fortschritt.

He is proud of his progress.

Wir sind mit dem Ergebnis zufrieden.

We are satisfied with the result.

Ask two questions when checking a phrase: Which preposition belongs to the adjective? Which case follows in this combination? Here the answers are an + dative, auf + accusative and mit + dative.
