01

auch wenn: even if, even though

Auch wenn introduces a concession: something that does not change the main statement. It can refer to a real fact, like even though, or to a possible situation, like even if. Like wenn, it sends the verb to the end of its clause.

Auch wenn wir unterschiedlicher Meinung sind, sollten wir respektvoll bleiben.

Even if we disagree, we should remain respectful.

Ich unterstütze den Vorschlag, auch wenn er nicht perfekt ist.

I support the proposal, even though it is not perfect.

Die Debatte war sachlich, auch wenn sie manchmal laut wurde.

The debate was objective, even though it sometimes got loud.

Auch wenn die Mehrheit dagegen ist, halte ich an meiner Position fest.

Even if the majority is against it, I am sticking to my position.

When the auch-wenn clause comes first, the main clause usually starts with its verb: Auch wenn wir unterschiedlicher Meinung sind, sollten wir respektvoll bleiben. The debate and speakers here are invented.

02

selbst wenn: even in the extreme case

Selbst wenn also means even if, but it stresses an extreme or unlikely case. It is often combined with Konjunktiv II for hypothetical situations: Selbst wenn wir mehr Geld hätten, würden nicht alle Probleme verschwinden.

Selbst wenn wir mehr Geld hätten, würden nicht alle Probleme verschwinden.

Even if we had more money, not all problems would disappear.

Selbst wenn beide Seiten nachgeben, bleibt der Kompromiss schwierig.

Even if both sides give way, the compromise remains difficult.

Obwohl states a real fact, wenn sets a condition, and auch wenn and selbst wenn say that even this would not change the result. Der Kompromiss means compromise and nachgeben to give way.

03

Move towards a compromise

In a debate, auch wenn and selbst wenn let you acknowledge the other side and still hold your position, or signal that you are ready to compromise. Polite debate turns often combine them with ich verstehe or wir könnten.

Wir könnten zustimmen, selbst wenn nicht alle Forderungen ___.
Ein Kompromiss ist sinnvoll, auch wenn ___.
Selbst wenn die Abstimmung knapp ___, akzeptieren wir das Ergebnis.

Auch wenn ich Ihre Sorge verstehe, sehe ich die Sache anders.

Even though I understand your concern, I see the matter differently.

Wir könnten zustimmen, selbst wenn nicht alle Forderungen erfüllt werden.

We could agree, even if not all demands are met.

Ein Kompromiss ist sinnvoll, auch wenn keine Seite ganz zufrieden ist.

A compromise makes sense, even if neither side is completely satisfied.

Selbst wenn die Abstimmung knapp ausfällt, akzeptieren wir das Ergebnis.

Even if the vote is close, we will accept the result.

Die Forderung means demand, die Abstimmung vote and knapp ausfallen to be close. A separable verb joins up again at the end of the clause: selbst wenn die Abstimmung knapp ausfällt.
