Genitive prepositions in a report

Reports and articles often use prepositions with the genitive: trotz (despite), während (during), aufgrund (due to) and anlässlich (on the occasion of). The article or adjective after them takes a genitive ending: trotz der Säkularisierung, anlässlich des Festes.

Trotz der Säkularisierung spielen Feiertage für viele Familien eine Rolle.

Despite secularisation, holidays play a role for many families.

Während der Feiertage bleiben viele Geschäfte geschlossen.

During the holidays, many shops stay closed.

Aufgrund sinkender Mitgliederzahlen legen einige Gemeinden ihre Räume zusammen.

Due to falling membership, some congregations are merging their premises.

Anlässlich des Festes lädt die Gemeinde alle Nachbarn ein.

On the occasion of the festival, the community invites all the neighbours.

Die Säkularisierung means secularisation, die Gemeinde a religious or local community and die Mitgliederzahl the number of members. In speech, some people use the dative after trotz or während, but written German uses the genitive. Without an article, a plural adjective in the genitive ends in -er: aufgrund sinkender Zahlen.

02

Dative prepositions: seit, gegenüber, bei, gemäß

Many common prepositions always take the dative: aus, bei, mit, nach, seit, von, zu and gegenüber. Formal texts also use gemäß (according to, under) with the dative: gemäß dem Grundgesetz. Check the article: dem for masculine and neuter, der for feminine, den plus -n for the plural.
