01
Es as a placeholder: Es wurde viel diskutiert
When a verb is used without an accusative object, such as diskutieren über, sprechen über, suchen nach or schweigen, its passive has no subject. German then puts es in position 1 as a placeholder: Es wurde lange über das Denkmal diskutiert. The focus is on the activity, not on who did it.
Es wurde lange über das neue Denkmal diskutiert.
The new memorial was debated for a long time.
Es wurde in vielen Familien lange geschwiegen.
In many families, people kept silent for a long time.
Es wurde lange nach den Namen der Opfer gesucht.
People searched for the victims' names for a long time.
Es wurde monatelang im Stadtarchiv geforscht.
Research went on in the town archive for months.
The es is not a real subject, so the verb is always singular. Das Denkmal means memorial or monument, das Stadtarchiv the town archive and forschen to do research. Schweigen (to keep silent) has the participle geschwiegen.
02
Something else in position 1: es disappears
The es is only a placeholder. As soon as another element takes position 1, such as a time, a place or a prepositional phrase, es disappears: Am 27. Januar wird an die Opfer erinnert. In a dass clause there is no es either: dass viel diskutiert wurde.
| Word order | German example |
|---|---|
| es in position 1 | Es wurde viel diskutiert. |
| time in position 1 | Danach wurde viel diskutiert. |
| place in position 1 | In der Schule wurde viel diskutiert. |
| dass clause | dass viel diskutiert wurde |
Am 27. Januar wird an die Opfer erinnert.
On 27 January, the victims are remembered.
In der Schule wurde viel über die NS-Zeit gesprochen.
At school, there was a lot of talk about the Nazi era.
Bei der Gedenkfeier wurde eine Minute lang geschwiegen.
At the commemoration, there was a minute's silence.
Danach wurde lange über die Ausstellung diskutiert.
Afterwards, the exhibition was discussed at length.
27 January is the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz in 1945; in Germany it is the day of remembrance for the victims of National Socialism. Do not add es after the verb. Die Gedenkfeier means commemoration ceremony, die NS-Zeit the Nazi era.
03
With modal verbs: An die Opfer muss erinnert werden
With a modal verb, the impersonal passive uses the modal plus participle plus werden. The modal stays singular because there is no subject: An die Opfer muss erinnert werden. In a dass clause, the modal moves to the very end: dass offen gesprochen werden sollte.
An die Opfer muss erinnert werden.
The victims must be remembered.
Über die Vergangenheit sollte offen gesprochen werden.
The past should be talked about openly.
Die Schülerinnen finden, dass über die Stolpersteine in ihrer Straße gesprochen werden sollte.
The pupils think that the Stolpersteine in their street should be talked about.
Die Lehrerin sagt, dass an jeden einzelnen Namen erinnert werden muss.
The teacher says that every single name must be remembered.
Stolpersteine are small brass plaques set into the pavement in front of the last freely chosen home of a victim of National Socialism. Die Gedenkstätte is a memorial site, often at a historical place. Erinnern an takes the accusative: an jeden einzelnen Namen.
