Name the method
Two neighbours disagree about noise in a shared courtyard. Indem explains how someone achieves a result. It answers the question 'By doing what?' and puts the conjugated verb at the end.
Die Vermittlerin hilft, indem sie beiden Seiten zuhört.
The mediator helps by listening to both sides.
Sie klärt den Streit, indem sie konkrete Beispiele sammelt.
She clarifies the dispute by collecting concrete examples.

Indem describes a method here, not merely two events happening together. Ich helfe, indem ich zuhöre means I help by listening.

Make the connection explicit
The construction dadurch, dass connects a result with the action that produces it. You can put the whole method first. The following main clause then starts with its conjugated verb.
Sie schaffen Vertrauen dadurch, dass sie Absprachen einhalten.
They build trust by keeping agreements.
Dadurch, dass beide ausreden dürfen, wird das Gespräch ruhiger.
By allowing both to finish speaking, the conversation becomes calmer.
Eine Lösung entsteht dadurch, dass beide etwas nachgeben.
A solution emerges through both making some concessions.
Dadurch, dass sie Zeiten festlegen, vermeiden sie neue Missverständnisse.
By setting times, they avoid new misunderstandings.
Compare Wir helfen dadurch, dass wir zuhören with Dadurch, dass wir zuhören, helfen wir. In both versions, the dass clause ends with its verb.

Turn the agreement into action
The neighbours write down a small, testable agreement. Each method below names something they can actually do. Complete the clauses and check both the connector and the verb position.
Wir verhindern Missverständnisse, indem wir nachfragen.
We prevent misunderstandings by asking for clarification.
Wir sichern die Abmachung dadurch, dass wir sie aufschreiben.
We make the agreement clear and lasting by writing it down.
Dadurch, dass wir einen Termin vereinbaren, bleibt die Lösung überprüfbar.
By arranging a follow-up date, we keep the solution open to review.
Beim nächsten Treffen prüfen wir die Abmachung gemeinsam.
At the next meeting, we review the agreement together.
A compromise needs an action, not just a promise to be nicer. Indem wir nachfragen and dadurch, dass wir nachfragen describe a method without guaranteeing every conflict will disappear.
