B2-37 · Describe methods and results in the passive

Science and research

Use the past passive for methods, the present and Perfekt passive for findings, and the passive with modal verbs for limits and next steps in academic texts.

About 5 minutes to read · 12 quiz questions

Two researchers at a lab bench study simple unlabelled bar charts on a laptop, with sample tubes and a notebook beside them.

01

Describe the method in the past passive

Academic texts focus on what was done, not on who did it. The method section therefore uses the passive in the Präteritum: wurde or wurden plus the participle at the end. Für die Studie wurden 500 Erwachsene befragt.

Für die Studie wurden 500 Erwachsene online befragt.

For the study, 500 adults were surveyed online.

Die Daten wurden anonym erhoben und statistisch ausgewertet.

The data were collected anonymously and analysed statistically.

Die Teilnehmenden wurden zufällig zwei Gruppen zugeteilt.

The participants were randomly assigned to two groups.

Jede Messung wurde zweimal wiederholt.

Each measurement was repeated twice.

The study here is fictional. Wurden is plural: wurden befragt, but die Messung wurde wiederholt. Die Stichprobe means sample, erheben to collect data and auswerten to analyse.

02

Present the findings

When a paper presents its own text and results, it uses the present passive: In diesem Kapitel werden die Ergebnisse vorgestellt. Durch introduces what supports or causes something: Die Hypothese wird durch die Daten gestützt.

In diesem Kapitel werden die Ergebnisse vorgestellt.

In this chapter, the results are presented.

Die Hypothese wird durch die Daten gestützt.

The hypothesis is supported by the data.

Der Zusammenhang wird in Abbildung 2 dargestellt.

The relationship is shown in Figure 2.

Diese Frage ist bisher kaum untersucht worden.

This question has hardly been investigated so far.

For research already done, the passive Perfekt uses ist plus participle plus worden: Die Frage ist kaum untersucht worden. Die Abbildung means figure, der Zusammenhang relationship and stützen to support.

03

Limits and next steps

The discussion section names limits and next steps. Here the passive often follows a modal verb: können, müssen or sollten, then the participle and werden at the end. Die Ergebnisse können nicht verallgemeinert werden.

Weitere Faktoren müssen in künftigen Studien ___.
Die Stichprobe sollte in einer Folgestudie ___.
Die Ergebnisse können nicht ohne Weiteres ___.

Die Ergebnisse können nicht ohne Weiteres verallgemeinert werden.

The results cannot simply be generalised.

Weitere Faktoren müssen in künftigen Studien berücksichtigt werden.

Further factors must be taken into account in future studies.

Die Stichprobe sollte in einer Folgestudie vergrößert werden.

The sample should be enlarged in a follow-up study.

Die Befunde sollten mit Vorsicht interpretiert werden.

The findings should be interpreted with caution.

Ohne Weiteres means simply or without further checks, künftig future and mit Vorsicht with caution. Der Befund means finding. Sollten softens a recommendation, which suits the cautious style of research writing.
