01

Contrast two sides with während

You know während with the genitive for time: während des Films. As a conjunction, während can also set two facts against each other, like English while or whereas. It introduces a subordinate clause, so its verb goes to the end.

Während Lena kaum Zeit online verbringt, scrollt ihr Bruder stundenlang.

While Lena hardly spends any time online, her brother scrolls for hours.

Manche Influencer zeigen ihren Alltag, während andere nur Werbung posten.

Some influencers show their everyday life, while others only post adverts.

Während ältere Menschen eher Nachrichten lesen, schauen jüngere vor allem Videos.

While older people tend to read news, younger people mainly watch videos.

If the während-clause comes first, the main clause starts with its verb: Während Lena kaum Zeit online verbringt, scrollt ihr Bruder stundenlang. Context shows whether während means time or contrast.

02

wohingegen: a clear, formal contrast

Wohingegen means whereas and only ever expresses contrast, never time. It is more formal than während and usually introduces the second clause. Like während, it sends the verb to the end. Hingegen without wo- is an adverb instead and keeps the verb in second position.

Weigh both sides in a short essay

In an essay about social media, contrast helps you show both sides of the debate. Use während or wohingegen to join two clauses, and hingegen when you start a new main clause. Each choice affects word order.
