About 5 minutes to read · 13 quiz questions

Residents and visitors share a busy narrow street in a small historic town.

01

State a consequence

Sodass introduces a consequence. It sends the finite verb to the end: Die Gassen waren voll, sodass die Anwohner warten mussten. The clause gives the result, rather than the purpose.

Die Gassen waren voll, sodass die Anwohner warten mussten.

The narrow streets were full, so the residents had to wait.

Many visitors arrived at once, so the square quickly became full.

The bus was cancelled, so the visitors had to walk.

The town opened a second route, so the crowding decreased.

This town and its visitor numbers are invented. Die Gasse is a narrow street, die Anwohner residents and der Andrang a rush or crowd. So dass, written as two words, is also possible for sodass.

02

Link the result to a degree

So ... dass links a consequence to a degree: so laut, dass ... . Put so before the adjective or adverb being intensified. The result clause still places its finite verb last.

It was so loud that Eva could hardly hear anything.

The queue was so long that we waited for an hour.

The accommodation was so expensive that Ben left earlier.

The path was so narrow that only one person could pass through.

The second version explicitly connects our leaving to how loud it was.

03

Too much for a result to be possible

Zu ... als dass says a degree is too high for the following result to be possible.

The path is too narrow for two groups to pass at the same time.

The room is too small for the whole group to sleep there.

The crowd is too large for one bus to take all the visitors.

The costs are too high for us to accept the offer.

The construction already signals that the result is not possible. Do not add an extra nicht to express the same impossibility. Could in these examples is könnte or könnten, depending on the subject.
