01
Drop wenn: put the verb first
A condition can begin without wenn. The conjugated verb then moves to the first position: Wenn ich mehr Zeit hätte becomes Hätte ich mehr Zeit. The main clause follows the comma and starts with its own verb: würde ich, könnte der Chor.
| form | example |
|---|---|
| with wenn | Wenn ich mehr Zeit hätte, würde ich öfter ins Theater gehen. |
| without wenn | Hätte ich mehr Zeit, würde ich öfter ins Theater gehen. |
Hätte ich mehr Zeit, würde ich öfter ins Theater gehen.
If I had more time, I would go to the theatre more often.
Wäre die Bühne größer, könnte der Chor mitspielen.
If the stage were bigger, the choir could take part.
Hätte die Regisseurin mehr Geld, würde sie ein größeres Ensemble engagieren.
If the director had more money, she would hire a larger company.
Gäbe es mehr Proben, wären die Schauspieler sicherer.
If there were more rehearsals, the actors would be more confident.
The main clause may also begin with so or dann: Hätte ich mehr Zeit, so würde ich öfter gehen. Die Bühne means stage, die Probe rehearsal, das Ensemble the company of actors and die Regisseurin the director.
02
Real conditions in notices
Verb-first conditions also work for real possibilities in the indicative: Regnet es, findet die Aufführung im Saal statt. Formal notices often start with sollte or sollten for a case that is possible but not expected: Sollte die Vorstellung ausfallen, …
Sollte die Vorstellung ausfallen, erstatten wir den Eintrittspreis.
Should the performance be cancelled, we will refund the ticket price.
Kommt der Regisseur zu spät, beginnen wir ohne ihn.
If the director arrives late, we will start without him.
Sollten Sie Fragen haben, wenden Sie sich bitte an die Kasse.
Should you have any questions, please contact the box office.
Regnet es am Abend, findet die Aufführung im Saal statt.
If it rains in the evening, the performance takes place in the hall.
After the condition the main clause starts with its verb: Sollten Sie Fragen haben, wenden Sie sich an die Kasse. Die Vorstellung means performance, die Kasse box office, der Eintrittspreis ticket price and die Pause interval.
03
Look back on a premiere
For a past condition that did not happen, put hätte or wäre first and the participle at the end: Hätten wir mehr geprobt. The main clause uses hätte or wäre plus a participle as well. Choose wäre for verbs that form the Perfekt with sein, such as laufen, werden and gehen.
Hätten wir mehr geprobt, wäre die Premiere besser gelaufen.
If we had rehearsed more, the premiere would have gone better.
Wäre der Hauptdarsteller nicht krank geworden, hätten wir pünktlich begonnen.
If the lead actor had not fallen ill, we would have started on time.
Hätte die Regisseurin das Stück gekürzt, wären weniger Zuschauer in der Pause gegangen.
If the director had shortened the play, fewer spectators would have left at the interval.
Hätte ich das gewusst, hätte ich eine andere Rolle angenommen.
Had I known that, I would have accepted a different role.
Der Hauptdarsteller means lead actor, die Premiere opening night, die Rolle role, der Zuschauer spectator and kürzen to shorten. Krank werden takes sein, so the condition is Wäre er krank geworden.
