About 5 minutes to read · 12 quiz questions

A woman reads a novel in an armchair while a futuristic city with green towers appears in a dreamlike cloud above her.

01

angenommen: suppose for a moment

Angenommen introduces an imagined situation, like suppose in English. It is followed by a comma and either a clause in main-clause order or a dass-clause with the verb at the end. Konjunktiv II marks the idea as unreal: Angenommen, Maschinen könnten fühlen, …

Angenommen, Maschinen könnten fühlen, hätten sie dann Rechte?

Suppose machines could feel, would they then have rights?

Angenommen, dass niemand mehr arbeiten müsste, wie würden wir unsere Zeit verbringen?

Suppose nobody had to work any more, how would we spend our time?

Angenommen, die Erde wäre unbewohnbar, wohin würden die Menschen gehen?

Suppose the Earth were uninhabitable, where would people go?

Der Roman beschreibt eine Utopie, die schnell zur Dystopie wird.

The novel describes a utopia that quickly turns into a dystopia.

After the hypothesis, the next clause often starts with its verb or a question word: …, hätten sie dann Rechte? Die Utopie is an ideal society and die Dystopie a frightening one. Unbewohnbar means uninhabitable.

02

gesetzt den Fall: testing a scenario

Gesetzt den Fall works like angenommen but sounds more formal and is typical of debates and thought experiments. It also takes either main-clause order or a dass-clause. The phrase is fixed: always den Fall.

Gesetzt den Fall, ein Konzern kontrolliert alle Daten, wer schützt dann die Bürger?

Suppose a corporation controls all data, who protects the citizens then?

Gesetzt den Fall, dass die Simulation versagt, müssen wir sofort reagieren.

In case the simulation fails, we have to react immediately.

Gesetzt den Fall, die Roboter würden streiken, was dann?

Suppose the robots went on strike, what then?

In der Dystopie überwacht der Staat jeden Schritt der Menschen.

In the dystopia, the state monitors every step people take.

The scenario can be in the indicative when it is a realistic possibility, or in Konjunktiv II when it seems unlikely. In a Dystopie, life is controlled or frightening. Der Konzern means corporation and überwachen to monitor.

03

vorausgesetzt: a condition that must be met

Vorausgesetzt means provided that. Unlike angenommen and gesetzt den Fall, it does not invite you to imagine something; it names a condition for the main statement. It usually follows the main clause and, like the others, takes main-clause order or a dass-clause.
