01
One person, two actions
Lena is planning a gap year with a local partner organisation abroad. With the same person doing both actions, ohne ... zu describes an action that does not happen, and statt ... zu describes an alternative that the person does not choose. The infinitive clause has no separate subject, and zu stands before the infinitive.
Lena plant eine Auszeit, ohne ihre Ersparnisse vollständig auszugeben.
Lena is planning a break without spending all her savings.
Sie fragt bei einer Partnerorganisation nach, statt sofort einen Flug zu buchen.
She enquires with a partner organisation instead of booking a flight straight away.
Sie möchte mitarbeiten, ohne dem lokalen Team zusätzliche Arbeit zu machen.
She wants to help without creating extra work for the local team.
Statt sofort Ratschläge zu geben, versucht sie zunächst zuzuhören.
Instead of immediately giving advice, she first tries to listen.
With separable verbs, zu goes inside the infinitive, as in zuzuhören. Die Auszeit is time away from your usual routine; die Partnerorganisation is a partner organisation.
02
Name a different subject with dass
Use ohne dass or anstatt dass when the second action has a different subject. Each clause names its own subject, and the finite verb follows the other words in the subordinate clause. A dass-clause is also possible with the same subject, but a zu-infinitive is often shorter in that case.
| Who acts? | Construction |
|---|---|
| Same subject, action omitted | Lena hilft, ohne Geld zu verlangen. |
| Different subjects, action omitted | Lena hilft, ohne dass die NGO sie bezahlt. |
| Same subject, rejected alternative | Lena hört zu, statt sofort zu urteilen. |
| Different subjects, rejected alternative | Lena hört zu, anstatt dass nur die Koordinatorin zuhört. |
Lena kann nicht anfangen, ohne dass der Träger ihre Aufgaben bestätigt.
Lena cannot start without the programme provider confirming her tasks.
Sie bezahlt die Fahrt selbst, ohne dass die NGO die Kosten übernimmt.
She pays for the journey herself without the NGO covering the costs.
Anstatt dass Lena alles allein organisiert, übernimmt die Koordinatorin die Planung.
Instead of Lena organising everything alone, the coordinator takes over the planning.
Das Team bietet eine Einarbeitung an, anstatt dass die Freiwilligen sofort allein arbeiten.
The team offers an induction instead of the volunteers working alone straight away.
The examples describe one invented project, not rules for all placements. Der Träger is the organisation responsible for a programme, die Einarbeitung is induction, and die NGO is a non-governmental organisation.
03
Make responsibilities clear
These lines belong to Lena's email before she accepts the placement. Choose a zu-infinitive for her own actions and a dass-clause for an action with its own subject. If either kind of subordinate clause comes first, the main clause begins with its finite verb.
Ohne die Aufgaben vorher zu klären, möchte ich keinen Einsatz zusagen.
Without clarifying the tasks beforehand, I do not want to agree to a placement.
Anstatt dass wir über die Aufgaben vor Ort entscheiden, legt das lokale Team die Prioritäten fest.
Instead of us deciding on the tasks on site, the local team sets the priorities.
Ich helfe im Gemeinschaftsgarten, ohne dass dafür eine bezahlte Stelle wegfällt.
I help in the community garden without a paid job being lost as a result.
Statt nur Erfahrungen zu sammeln, möchte ich verlässlich mitarbeiten.
Instead of just gaining experience, I want to make a reliable contribution.
Zusagen means to agree to take something on, and der Einsatz here means a volunteer placement. Verlässlich means reliable, while eine Stelle fällt weg means that a job is lost.
