Last year, around 200 million passengers took off from German airports.

On board every one of these flights are flight attendants who keep an overview and ensure service.

As a passenger, you do notice quite a bit, but you still don't really know what's happening behind the scenes on such an aircraft.

To change that, I'll be accompanying flight attendants as they work for a day today.

I want to find out what daily life as a flight attendant is actually like,

how to deal with difficult passengers and whether there are any travel hacks that really work.

I really have a thousand questions and I'm very happy to be able to ask them all today.

Whether as a flight attendant or a regular passenger, anyone who travels a lot knows the problem.

Not in every country do you automatically have internet after landing.

So, that means you always have a spare pair of underwear with you and things like that?

Yes, right, exactly. So, in my case now, it's always a dress, a spare pair of underwear, or also things like a toothbrush and toothpaste.

But I do have the feeling, especially with flight attendants, that more attractive people are selected,

or at least that everyone always looks very neat and well-groomed. How is that?

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. All that's important to us is that the minimum requirements are met.

What does that mean?

That means, for example, that you need to have a minimum height.

That's not to appear particularly attractive or anything, but it also has to do with safety on board,

that we can simply reach all the emergency equipment and all the important buttons or similar things.

Today we are flying with the 321neo, with the Lima Alpha, so our newest 321 that we have.

This is the aircraft we will be flying to Gran Canaria with today.

What is there in our airplane?

Our galley is our kitchen.

As you can see, we have ovens here, we have hot water boilers,

but we also have lots of different boxes, let's call them,

and our trolleys, which are then really loaded with the sandwiches.

Here you can already see Coca-Cola, beer, water, that for everyone,

for everyone who also wants something, there is also enough. At our flight attendant station, where we will sit in a moment, we are now checking if our shoulder strap, flashlight and the like are all functioning and ready for use. It works.

We are now checking if all the emergency lights are on, if they are all lit, which means the LEDs up here and also on our doors. Everything is fine so far, which means we can sign them off in a moment.

Why does all this have to be checked before every flight? Because it should actually work.

also technology. Lamps remain in this case. It must always be ensured,

that they really work and then, in an emergency, of course, turn on.

During takeoff, these windows always have to be opened.

Why? What's the point of that?

The reason is very simple: so that we can look outside.

Because should we really have to evacuate in an emergency, we need to know where to send our passengers.

If there is water on the left, for example, and nobody is wearing a life vest, it's not a good idea.

The same applies, of course, if there are already fires or perhaps a lot of kerosene has already leaked out.

If people are flying on vacation and have forgotten their sunglasses, it's more practical for them if they can get sunglasses directly instead of maybe buying cheap ones on vacation that don't even protect their eyes.

Does it actually happen that despite the smoking ban, people actually smoke in the toilet sometimes?

Unfortunately yes, unfortunately it happens and I think that's the worst thing you can do to passengers and to us.

Really? Why? So you can smell it everywhere?

It's not so much about the smell, but about the life-threatening danger that actually radiates from it.

Because a cigarette that might have been unknowingly thrown into the trash can,

with a lot of dry paper in it, can start to burn very, very quickly. And a fire is really the worst thing that can happen to us here on board. How do you deal with difficult passengers? We know how stressful travel can be and how nerve-wracking it can be

to sit here in this small space with so many other people.

In that moment, there's not much you can do to change it, try to calmly influence the passenger

and try to make the trip from A to B as comfortable and pleasant as possible.

There's also this myth, the My High Club, meaning people have sex in airplane toilets, basically.

Does that happen often? Do you encounter that frequently?

I haven't personally encountered it. But I've heard a story or two.

I wouldn't recommend it to anyone yet.

Why?

Simply because airplane toilets aren't exactly the cleanest and because it is, after all, very intimate.

I think there are other ways to have better sex.

So it's not like it happens on every flight all the time?

No, definitely not. In the time I've been flying, I haven't witnessed it once, at least.

What do you think about when people clap?

I personally don't find it that bad.

If they want to express their joy that way and are happy to be on vacation now

want to haul so much? I think I'd rather travel comfortably. There are also people

How long will we actually be working today?

I assume we'll have around 12 hours today.

How does the work model function?

We are mostly scheduled for 70 to 80 hours in the air per month.

But on top of that, there's the preparation and debriefing time, or on such short and medium-haul flights, the turnaround.

So, how many flights do you have approximately?

I fly full-time and have three long-haul flights scheduled for next month.

But that doesn't mean it will stay that way.

Do you also always get hotels booked for you and stuff?

Correct, exactly. As a crew, we are always all in one hotel.

So that if something should happen, we can quickly connect and nobody is alone.

Perhaps also a prejudice that one often hears, but about crews amongst themselves.

When you have an off-day somewhere, have time, there isn't much flirting or sex among yourselves.

How does one actually become a flight attendant?

Being a flight attendant involves training, lasting about six weeks or more.

So it's a relatively quick training, I'd say.

Right, exactly. And that's why many people do it, for example, after their Abitur [high school diploma] or also gladly as a part-time job or similar while studying.

And what about the salary? So how much can one earn as a flight attendant?

Well, we have a collective agreement that regulates the whole thing.

Your earnings as a flight attendant are never the same amount.

This is because of shift allowances, whether you have overtime, whether you don't have overtime.

Your expenses vary depending on the destination country.

That's why there isn't an exact amount that you really see in your account month after month, but it also varies.

You definitely do this job out of passion.

You don't get rich doing it, but you get to see a lot of the world.

And I think that's really the wealth you can draw from it.

In addition, there are of course the discounted flights, which in turn helps you with your vacation.
