severe feet, very unkempt feet. We deal with odors, we deal with wounds,

So that means you have to cut them straight and not make them round.

In principle, by cutting out the corners, you're creating an ingrown toenail yourself.

This is called the nail groove.

You can imagine it like a shipping lane for the nail.

And if you keep cutting this open, the whole thing constricts.

The nail curls inward.

Then you get into a vicious cycle,

which has to be trimmed again and again.

Because it keeps getting inflamed,

when the little bit that you leave on grows back.

Well, because people are just no longer mobile at all, they can hardly move anymore.

And the toenails, they keep growing.

And that's why they need to be checked and worked on regularly,

because they simply can't do it themselves anymore and are not able to.

With foot care, is it a bit like with a hairdresser,

that you get talking to people and that you might also have your regular customers again and again?

Yes, totally. So regular customers are actually the most important thing because it is also a basis of trust,

to sit down like that, to show your feet. You're kind of at the mercy of someone.

You get to know each other, and eventually it's not really about the feet anymore,

but the people are just happy when they can come, when they can share.

Many people are also very lonely. For them, this is really the highlight

to come to us once a month and tell us about things.

And you accompany these people for many years and naturally also notice

when they deteriorate or experience a stroke of fate.

That affects me when you know, gosh, two months ago they came in like this

and suddenly they come in with a walker or a wheelchair.

Diabetes often remains undetected for a very long time.

And as a result, the patients become insensitive to pain and no longer notice,

the patients no longer have that and then keep walking around on it forever,

until we or a doctor discovers that something is perhaps already open or damaged.

What was the most extreme case, the most extreme foot you've treated so far?

So extreme ingrown toenails are sometimes quite severe. That means nails grow really

far out, then grow back in. But what I've also seen before,

was open bone here in these areas, which came towards you,

where you could already see when taking off your socks that something was wrong, because it had already

stuck. Because the wounds remain untreated, there's also an extreme odor that comes with it.

These are then really extreme cases. I don't feel any disgust or problem with that at all.

On the contrary, I'm glad that it's seen, discovered, and can be dealt with immediately.

If something like this remains untreated, it naturally also frequently leads to amputations or,

people dying from blood poisoning. The problem is, making people understand,

that it's important to treat it now, because they simply don't notice it.

And then it's always like, "Yeah, it doesn't hurt."

"It can't be that bad," but that's exactly what the disease entails, that they don't feel it anymore.

So one problem leads to another, really.

So you can't really get out of this cycle at all.
